To provide a 100KW biomass plantroom, incorporating full gas boiler back-up, to provide a low carbon heating solution and part of an excellent BREEAM rating for the project. The new 315 pupil school at Portland was originally used as a 2012 Olympic venue for the sailing events and the plantroom was installed prior to the games. It was then re-commissioned once the venue had been converted into a school.

Scope of services

To design, manufacture, deliver and commission an integrated biomass/gas boiler plantroom, incorporating a Schmid 100KW boiler, integrated wood pellet fuel store, pumps, buffer vessel, valves and pipework as well as 2 off 85KW wall hung gas boilers.



The 9m x 3.8m x 3.5m plantroom was fitted with fuel fill pipework for blown fuel deliveries and finished in micro-rib cladding panels. The internal pipework comprises 2 heat meters, one on the total output and one on the biomass to ensure RHI compliance. The buffer vessel is connected onto the biomass only so that the gas boilers will only operate as a secondary heat source.



The delivery of a plug and play prefabricated plantroom enabled the unit to be delivered in time for the 2012 games and the biomass specification provides the carbon reduction commitment and helped towards the excellent BREEAM award.
